What Is X458 Rivetless Chain?

X458 chain is a drop forged rivetless conveyor chain designed for engineering-class conveyor applications where strength, flexibility and ease of maintenance are all required. The designation tells you everything about its construction: a 4-inch pitch and a 5/8-inch pin diameter, drop-forged from high-strength steel and assembled without riveted connections.

Unlike conventional roller chain, rivetless chain uses a loose link construction where components connect and disconnect without specialist tools. This makes in-service repairs, chain extension and link replacement significantly faster.

The drop-forged manufacturing process delivers a high strength-to-weight ratio and a consistent bearing surface geometry across every link. Heat-treated components, when specified, provide additional resistance to surface wear and shock loading in the most demanding positions.

X458 rivetless chain is part of Renold's broader rivetless conveyor chain range, which covers a full spectrum of engineering-class chain for heavy industrial use.

X458 Chain Applications

The loose-link design and forged construction of X458 chain make it suited to a wide range of conveyor configurations across industries where abrasion, moisture, and variable loads are the norm.

Timber and Wood Processing

X458 chain is specified for overhead and drag conveyor positions in sawmills and timber processing facilities, including green timber handling, sorting lines, stacker feeds, and chip-handling conveyors. For timber handling chain applications across the mill floor, Renold NZ can advise on whether X458 rivetless chain or a welded steel WH series chain is better suited to each conveyor position.

Overhead Power and Free Conveyors

The lateral flexibility inherent in the loose link construction makes X458 chain well-suited to overhead carousel systems and power-and-free conveyor arrangements used in automotive assembly, appliance manufacturing and paint line applications.

Flight and Drag Conveyors

Shaped for bulk material movement, X458 is commonly used in flight conveyor configurations for agricultural processing, sugar mills, swarf handling and similar bulk drag applications.

Industrial Handling and Manufacturing

Material handling systems, trolley conveyors, washing lines and general assembly line conveyors across manufacturing sectors. The self-clearing tendency of the loose link design reduces material packing in contaminated or sticky product environments.

For drive and transmission requirements beyond the conveyor, Renold's industrial chain drive products cover roller chain and specialist variants for auxiliary drives across the same sectors.

X458 Rivetless Chain Features and Construction

  • Drop forged links: Each link is manufactured by drop forging rather than casting or pressing, producing a denser grain structure and superior surface finish at the bearing areas. This directly improves pin-to-link wear life under sustained load.
  • Rivetless assembly: No staking, riveting or specialised tooling required for assembly or disassembly. Replacement links can be fitted in the field during a maintenance window, with no cold-press or punch tools required.
  • 4-inch pitch, 5/8-inch pin diameter: Standard X458 geometry provides compatibility with the wide range of sprockets and conveyor track systems designed to this specification. Renold NZ can advise on sprockets for rivetless chain conveyors to ensure correct pitch engagement and maximise chain service life.
  • Heat treatment options: Chain components are available with heat-treated pins for improved surface hardness and wear resistance in high-load or abrasive applications. Selection depends on operating conditions and load calculations for each conveyor position.
  • Loose-link self-clearing design: The clearance between link components reduces the tendency for material to pack in the chain joints, supporting longer service intervals in contaminated operating environments.
  • Attachment configurations: Attachment links and extended pins are available to suit specific conveyor flight configurations, drag blade mountings and product carrier arrangements. Contact Renold NZ to discuss custom attachment requirements for non-standard conveyor widths or configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is X458 rivetless chain used for?

X458 chain is used in overhead power and free conveyors, flight and drag conveyors, trolley conveyors and industrial material handling systems across a wide range of sectors. Common applications include timber processing and handling lines, automotive assembly, paint lines, agricultural processing, swarf conveyors and general manufacturing. Its combination of forged strength and tool-free assembly makes it a practical choice wherever in-service maintenance access is limited.

What does the X458 designation mean?

The designation describes the chain's key dimensions. The 4 indicates a 4-inch (approximately 102mm) pitch, and 58 refers to the 5/8-inch pin diameter. This is standard engineering class rivetless chain geometry, compatible with the wide range of sprockets and conveyor hardware manufactured to the X458 specification.

How does rivetless chain differ from standard conveyor chain?

Standard welded steel conveyor chain uses press-fitted or welded pin assemblies that require tooling to disassemble. Rivetless chain connects and disconnects without tools, allowing individual links to be replaced or chain lengths adjusted on the conveyor without removing the entire run. This reduces planned and unplanned maintenance time, particularly on long conveyor systems where a single link failure would otherwise require significant downtime to repair.

Can Renold NZ supply matched sprockets for X458 chain?

Yes. Running X458 rivetless chain against mismatched or worn sprockets accelerates wear and shortens service life regardless of chain quality. Renold NZ recommends replacing sprockets and chain together at scheduled intervals and can advise on tooth form, pitch diameter and material specification for your specific application.

How do I enquire about X458 chain for my operation?

Contact Renold NZ's Auckland team on +64 9 828 5018 or email nzsales@renold.com. To support a prompt response, it helps to have your conveyor length, operating speed, estimated load per metre, pitch requirements and any attachment configurations on hand. For planned replacement orders, getting in touch early in your maintenance cycle will always achieve better lead times than emergency breakdown supply.
